Today Uzhhorod hosted 44 boys and girls who, along with their couches, came from different parts of the country to represent 22 higher educational establishments in Ukrainian student contest in painting “Silver Easel”.

Thanks to the efforts of the founders and organizers of the event – Transcarpathian Academy of Arts (Rector I. Nebesnyk) and Transcarpathian Art Foundation (Head R. Brovdi), the contest can claim to be most representative and award-winning in its category. It was done everything necessary for the competition to be just like “adult” art forums – starting from the multifaceted rich programme and attributes, ending with prominent jury, fully fledged nominations and awards.

Their first pre-contest day the young artists began with the introduction of Transcarpathian Academy of Art, its scientific and educational activities, traditions and teaching staff. There they also learned of the history and the present of the Transcarpathian school of painting.

Then, dividing into groups, the contestants made a fascinating tour through the streets and sights of the old Uzhhorod under the auspices of the experienced ethnographers. Thus, the contestants were able not only to get acquainted with the regional centre of Transcarpathia, but also got the opportunity to dip in its mood and atmosphere and to choose the places they would like to reproduce in their paintings during the first contest stage “Cityscape”.

During leisurely walks and interesting stories of guides, the contestants were greatly impressed by the Roman Catholic Church of St. George, Uzhhorod Orthodox Synagogue, cosy architecture of “Czechoslovak district” Galagov, landscapes of Korzo and Augustyna Voloshyna streets.

Obviously the most powerful emotions and creative inspiration were got by the contestants while visiting the Transcarpathian Regional Art Museum named after Y. Bokshai, where they revealed a real creative extravaganza of the artists-coryphaei of the Transcarpathian school as well as numerous works of painting, drawing, sculpture, decorative and applied arts of the XII — beginning of XX centuries.

Such a busy and eventful day was ended with the official opening ceremony of the “Silver Easel”, acquaintance with the contest rules and jury members. The words of welcome as well as instructions and wishes for the contestants were made by the Head of Transcarpathian Art Foundation Robert Brovdi, Rector of Transcarpathian Academy of Arts Ivan Nebesnyk, famous Ukrainian painter, the laureate of T. Shevchenko National Prize Anatolii Kryvolap, the People's Artists of Ukraine Volodymyr Mykyta and Borys Kuzma.

Introducing the jury and contest programme, Head of the “Silver Easel” Organizing Committee Robert Brovdi noted that “today, the jury is represented by 3 laureates of the National Prize named after T. Shevchenko, 3 academicians, 5 People’s and 1 Honoured artists of Ukraine, 1 Honoured Worker of Art of Ukraine.

It sets a high standard of assessment criteria, but motivates to better revelation of their skills and talent. That's why we organize such an event. To show different schools and directions of modern Ukrainian art. And demonstrate how it can consolidate our country and society within difficult times”.

Revealing the concept and idea of the organizers of “Cityscape” contest stage, Robert Brovdi noted that Uzhhorod apparently never had the opportunity to be simultaneously depicted on the canvases by such a great number of painters from different parts of Ukraine. “We thoroughly introduced you to the city on purpose, so you could see it with your own eyes, felt it with your artistic mood. You should paint the very part of the city that you liked and inspired by. And it will be truly interesting and valuable.”

After the official opening, it was prepared an entertainment programme for better acquaintance of the contestants. As it is better to perform the complex tasks in friendly and warm atmosphere. Therefore, there are three intense and interesting days ahead of the contestants. On Wednesday they will perform the task of the “Cityscape” stage in the streets and squares of the regional centre. The next day they will travel to the picturesque surroundings of the Nevytskyi Castle, where the creative contest will be continued with the “Landscape” stage. Finally, on Friday there will be the final stage – “Portrait”.

We remind you that on 21 October at 12:00 in the hall-atrium of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration all comers can find the works of the contestants, to watch the process of painting during the final stage, and to communicate with famous artists, art critics and contest organizers.
