Victor Sydorenko is a well-known Ukrainian painter, curator, pedagogue, author of objects, photo compositions, social and scientific texts. In 2001, he founded the Modern Art Research Institute under the Academy of Arts of Ukraine, which conducts fundamental research in all types of the contemporary art. This autumn Victor came to Uzhhorod and headed the Jury of the "Silver Easel" contest. His opinion is extremely authoritative and important, and we would like to share it with you.

– Victor, we are happy to greet you in Uzhhorod! In your opinion, how much is it important for "Silver Easel" to be in Transcarpathia?

– "Silver Easel" is founded in Transcarpathia not accidentally, since it is the very region that has traditions and a powerful art school established by Erdeli and Bokshai. In addition, artistic institutions are usually formed in the cities where there are academies. The fourth full academy in Ukraine, which was recently founded, is the Transcarpathian Academy of Arts. It is a full academy because in other regional centres there are wonderful artists, but there are no established traditions. Here the academy foundation is a teaching of the founders of the Transcarpathian school of painting. In Transcarpathia, everything is imbued with the artistic aura, and probably there is no man who does not know such coryphaei as Erdeli, Bokshai, Kotska, Mykyta. Thus, it's no coincidence that the Brovdi family started this project exactly here – in Transcarpathia.

– You had the opportunity to see the art centre, which is being built in Uzhhorod. What will you say about it?

– Yes, I did. And after Robert Brovdi presented me the new projects it became clear that here it would be opened powerful artistic institutions, which will allow developing and promoting the Ukrainian contemporary art in the world. One can say as much as possible about the great talent of the Ukrainians, but if we do not tell about it to the world, nobody will know about us. I think when such a creative atmosphere prevails in the city, it gives impetus to all people to be more frank and open.

"This contest activates the city life in particular and the Ukrainian art market on the whole."

– The contest is constantly transforming, developing. How will you evaluate the innovations?

– Everything that remains unchanged or static disappears, but if the contest dynamically develops, it gains a new format and then it has the future!

– For the first time, this autumn "Silver Easel" became the open contest. Foreigners are interested in it. It is planned the contest format to be changed. What do out think about it?

–  "Silver Easel" should be an international contest! It should be visited not only by students but also by the young artists who have already developed professionally. It would be great to bring together art representatives of different countries here. In addition, the contest is attended by the well-known curators, art dealers, gallery owners, publishers of the specialized literature, which in the future will give impetus to the promotion of young, talented artists. This contest activates the city life in particular and the Ukrainian art market on the whole.

"The first victory of a young man is a great impetus for his creative development."

– New knowledge, experience, styles, ideas – what can participants of the “Silver Easel” learn?

– First of all, the aim of such a contest is to enable artists to communicate with each other, since they can paint at home or in academies, but when communicating with other artists who paint in a different way, young people’s style is mutually enriching. Since the artistic space is not so large, it is the contest that is the platform where artists can get acquainted and communicate, and those who win, in general, get the preferences in the form new opportunities. The first victory of a young man is a great impetus for his creative development.

 – Please, can you give some advice for our future contestants?

– It is necessary to be versatile. Painting is just one form of transferring an image, and you need to master as much as possible of such forms. The richer an artist's style will be, the more an artist will have the opportunity to promote his idea. As the contemporary art is not a craft, but an art of ideas expressed by visual means. Therefore, to promote their ideas, artists need to apply as much visual means as possible.
